Summer 2002. The Palestinian filmmaker Michel Khleifi and the Israeli filmmaker Eyal Sivan set off on a cinematographic journey in their country, Palestine-Israël. In the Spring of 1990, Daniel Farson flew to Moscow with Gilbert & George. He was there to cover their exhibition for the Sunday Telegraph, but the experience became so strange that he came downstairs one morning in the Ukraine Hotel and told them - This should be a book. Apart from the problems of staging such a show in Russia - the catalogues weighed 7 1/2 tons alone - they arrived at a crucial time in Moscow's history. Despite a sense of impending doom there was a momentary mood of optimism, a fleeting freedom reflected in the speech by a Soviet spokesman who admitted that such an event would not have been allowed in the previous years of Stagnation. It was not by change that Gilbert & George chose One World as the exhibition's title, for their work is noted for crossing barriers, appealing to all people - especially the young Judging by the enthusiasm of the young Russians who crowded into the rooms on opening day, their claim that this was a Turning Point In 20th Century Art was confirmed. Yet Gilbert & George, probely the most controversial artists working in the world today, have been subjected to such virulent abuse that it verges on paranoia. The Mosow exhibition received no official blessing or funding. Farson asks Why The Hatred ? and Who Are Gilbert & George ? Approaching them with an open mind he presents the case both for and against them. His gradual understanding of the artists and their work runs parallel with the historic events in Moscow, reaching its climax as Farson was swept into the May Day demonstration in Red Square. The book is richly illustrated with black and white photographs and colour plates.

In this groundbreaking work, Ariella Azoulay thoroughly revises our understanding of the ethical status of photography. It must, she insists, be understood in its inseparability from the many catastrophes of recent history. She argues that photography is a particular set of relations between individuals and the powers that govern them and, at the same time, a form of relations among equals that constrains that power. L'irruption sur la scène publique, culturelle et politique de l'affirmation homosexuelle a entraîné, au cours des dernières années et à l'échelle internationale, une prolifération de discours sur la définition même de l'homosexualité, et soulevé tout un ensemble de problèmes théoriques, sociologiques, philosophiques : qu'est-ce qu'un homosexuel aujourd'hui ? qu'est-ce qu'une identité ? qu'est-ce qu'une mobilisation politique ? Didier Eribon propose ici une série de réflexions qui se déploient selon trois axes. D'abord une analyse de l'expérience vécue, dans laquelle il s'efforce de ressaisir comment une place infériorisée est assignée aux homosexuels dans la société et comment leur subjectivité s'en trouve marquée. Il s'efforce ensuite de restituer quelques étapes cruciales de la constitution de l'identité gay moderne au XIXe siècle, à la fois dans la littérature et dans la culture populaire. Il étudie alors comment le procès d'Oscar Wilde mit un terme provisoire à l'émergence de cette prise de parole, et comment il en alimenta par la suite les résurgences (chez Gide et Proust notamment). Enfin, il s'attache à commenter les textes de Michel Foucault sur toutes ces questions en s'interrogeant sur ce que peut être une « culture gay » aujourd'hui. Comment les gays peuvent-ils reformuler eux-mêmes leurs propres personnalités, dans un geste toujours recommencé d'écart par rapport aux normes ? Telle est finalement la préoccupation autour de laquelle s'articulent les trois parties de ce livre, Philosophe et historien des idées, Didier Eribon est l'auteur d'une célèbre biographie de Michel Foucault (Flammarion, 1989), qui a été traduite en dix-sept langues et fait référence dans le monde entier, Il a poursuivi ce travail avec Michel Foucault et ses contemporains (Fayard, 1994). Il a publié également une étude sur Georges Dumézil (Faut-il brûler Dumézil ?, Flammarion, 1992) et trois livres d'entretiens (avec Georges Dumézil, Claude Lévi Strauss et Ernst Gmbrich)."
